Lawn Care Program
A comprehensive lawn care program encompasses every facet of lawn maintenance: balanced feeding, preventative applications, proper diagnosis, and professional treatment. As with any living organism, this system will limit stress and ensure proper nutrition and health.
The feeding (fertilization) schedule is based around the active times of the grass: from early spring to late fall. During the winter months, grass goes into a dormant state and basically shuts down. The dormant grass does not draw in many nutrients and should not be fertilized. Different fertilizer blends are used at different times of the year specific to the custom needs of the grass at the given time. For example, a high nitrogen blend is more effective in the early spring, while a high potassium blend (respectively) is more beneficial in the fall. In addition, slow release fertilizers promote even, steady feeding. They are in granular form and dissolve over time, providing a constant feeding to the grass in-between applications.
A thorough lawn care program will also provide additional services. These services include weed control (through pre and post-emergent herbicides), grub control, lime applications, aerations, and over-seeding. A Lawn care program and weed control go hand in hand. A healthy lawn is naturally resistant to weeds; however no lawn is completely resistant. As a result, pre-emergent herbicides limit unwanted weed germination and a selective post-emergent herbicide is typically employed to stop any that sprout. A grub control treatment is an insecticide additive to a fertilization round aimed at stopping beetle larvae from attacking the grass’s root system. Aerations will limit thatch and provides oxygen into the soil, while seeding (generally following aeration) will thicken the lawn and fill in any sparse spots. Lastly, a lime application will balance pH which directly affects nutrient availability to the grass.
